SALFORD DIOCESAN LOURDES PILGRIMAGE
SAFEGUARDING STATEMENT
The Salford Lourdes Pilgrimage is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk.
The Pilgrimage operates in line with the established safeguarding policies and procedures of the Diocese of Salford, which reflect UK law and national guidance for the Catholic Church in England and Wales. These arrangements are in place to help prevent harm, promote safe practice and ensure that safeguarding concerns are responded to promptly and appropriately.
When in Lourdes, the Pilgrimage also recognises and supports the Charter for the Protection of Minors and Vulnerable Persons issued by the Diocese of Tarbes and Lourdes. This Charter sets out the safeguarding standards and reporting requirements that apply within the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, in accordance with French law.
On behalf of the Bishop and Trustees of the Diocese of Salford, the Director of the Lourdes Pilgrimage has overall responsibility for safeguarding during the Pilgrimage and is supported by the Pilgrimage Coordination Team in collaboration with the officers of the Diocesan Safeguarding Team. Together, they are responsible for:
-
ensuring appropriate safeguarding arrangements are in place before and during the Pilgrimage;
-
making sure that all clergy, staff and volunteers are aware of and follow safeguarding expectations and codes of conduct;
-
ensuring that safeguarding concerns are taken seriously and acted upon without delay; and
-
liaising with the Diocesan safeguarding lead, Sanctuary authorities and statutory agencies as required.
All clergy, employees and volunteers involved in the Salford Lourdes Pilgrimage are expected to act in accordance with these safeguarding requirements, to maintain appropriate professional boundaries and to raise any concerns about the safety or wellbeing of any person without hesitation.
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and the Pilgrimage is committed to fostering a culture of care, vigilance and accountability for all who take part.
